एक तुम्हारा होना
क्या से क्या कर देता है
बेजुबान छत‚ दीवारों को
घर कर देता है।

खाली शब्दों में
आता है
ऐसा अर्थ पिरोना
गीत वन गया-सा
लगता है 
घर का कोना-कोना
एक तुम्हारा होना
सपनों को स्वर देता है।

आरोहों अवरोहों से
समझाने
लगती हैं
तुमसे जुड़कर
चीजें भी
बतियाने लगती हैं
एक तुम्हारा होना
अपनापन भर देता है
एक तुम्हारा होना
क्या से क्या कर देता है।


English Translation

Just your presence,
what an impact it has!
Makes the home out of
mute walls and ceilings!

Even to bare words,
you impact significant meaning!
Every nook and corner of home seems
to be singing now!
Just your presence,
gives voice to [my] dreams!

Stairs going up and stairs going down
talk to each other!
Connecting you, things too
talk to each other!
Just your presence,
makes me feel loved!
Just your presence,
what an impact it has!

ये नव वर्ष हमे स्वीकार नहीं

धरा ठिठुरती है सर्दी से
आकाश में कोहरा गहरा है

सूना है प्रकृति का आँगन
कुछ रंग नहीं , उमंग नहीं
हर कोई है घर में दुबका हुआ
नव वर्ष का ये कोई ढंग नहीं

चंद मास अभी इंतज़ार करो
निज मन में तनिक विचार करो
नये साल नया कुछ हो तो सही
क्यों नक़ल में सारी अक्ल बही

उल्लास मंद है जन -मन का
आयी है अभी बहार नहीं
ये नव वर्ष हमे स्वीकार नहीं
है अपना ये त्यौहार नहीं

ये धुंध कुहासा छंटने दो
रातों का राज्य सिमटने दो
प्रकृति का रूप निखरने दो
फागुन का रंग बिखरने दो

प्रकृति दुल्हन का रूप धार
जब स्नेह – सुधा बरसायेगी
शस्य – श्यामला धरती माता
घर -घर खुशहाली लायेगी

तब चैत्र शुक्ल की प्रथम तिथि
नव वर्ष मनाया जायेगा
आर्यावर्त की पुण्य भूमि पर
जय गान सुनाया जायेगा

युक्ति – प्रमाण से स्वयंसिद्ध
नव वर्ष हमारा हो प्रसिद्ध
आर्यों की कीर्ति सदा -सदा
नव वर्ष चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा

अनमोल विरासत के धनिकों को
चाहिये कोई उधार नहीं
ये नव वर्ष हमे स्वीकार नहीं

We don't accept this new year
This is not our festival
This is not our custom
This is not our way of life

Earth is shivering from cold
Sky is very foggy
Borders of gardens and markets are
guarded by the Chilled air

Nature's cradle is barren
There is no colour, no enthusiasm
Everyone is crouched within home
This is no way for a new year

Wait for a few months
Think about it a little
New year must bring something new, doesn't it?
Why forget common sense in copying something

Everyone's heart is low on joy
It isn't spring season yet
We don't accept this new year
This is not our festival

Let the fog clear

Let darkness limit

Let Nature's beauty shine

Let colours of Spring open up

When Nature will shower love

like newlywed bride

Mother earth, our lush green earth

bring joy to everyone

Only then on first day of Chaitra Shukla month

we will celebrate new year

On blessed land of Aryavrat

song of victory will be sung

Self-sufficient logically and in implication

Our new work will be popular

मैं तुम्हारी बाट जोहूँ

तुम दिशा मत मोड़ जाना

तुम अगर ना साथ दोगे

पूर्ण कैसे छंद होंगे

भावना के ज्वार कैसे

पंक्तिओ में बंद होंगे

वर्णमाला में दुखों की

और कुछ मत जोड़ जाना

देह से हूँ दूर लेकिन

हूँ ह्रदय के पास भी मैं

नयन में सावन संजोये

गीत भी मधुमास भी मैं

तार में झंकार भर कर

बीन-सा मत तोड़ जाना

पी गई सारा अंधेरा

दीप-सी जलती रही मैं

इस भरे पाषांण युग में

मोम सी गलती रही मैं

प्रातः को संध्या बना कर

सूर्य सा मत छोड़ जाना

I will wait for you,
you shouldn't change direction

If you won't be there,
who will complete my words,
how will floods of emotion,
be captured in lines of poem?

In alphabet of sorrows,
please don't add anything more

I am distant, yet
I am closer to your heart
with hopes in my eyes,
I am poem and [season of] poetry too

By plucking the strings,
don't break my clarinet

I absorbed all the darkness
and lit myself like a lamp
In this crowded hard world
I melted like wax

In the evening, after the morning
don't abandon me like sun

पास हुए हम

पास हुए हम, हुर्रे हुर्रे!

दूर हुए गम, हुर्रे हुर्रे!

रोज नियम से किय परिश्रम

और खपाया भेजा,

धीरे-धीरे, थोड़ा-थोड़ा,

हर दिन ज्ञान सहेजा,

रुके नही हम, हुर्रे हुर्रे!

हम कछुआ ही सही, चल रहे

लगातार पर धीमें,

हम खरगौश नहीं कि दौड़े,

सोयें रास्तें हीं में।

रूका नहीं क्रम, हुर्रे हुर्रे!

बात नकल की कोई हमनें

कभी ना मन में लाई,

सिर्फ पढ़ाई के बल पर ही

आह सफलता पाई,

Hurrah! We passed [the exams]

Hurrah! All the sorrows have vanished

We worked hard every day

and crammed our brains

in parts and pieces

we learned everything

slowly yet steadily

and slept off on the way

Only focus was power of study

What life is that life, which couldn't be useful its country
What sandalwood is that sandalwood, which couldn't even make its forest fragrant

On whose land you were born, whose air you breathed
Whose nectar your drunk, whose soil your body played in
What son is that who couldn't fulfil his duties towards his motherland

Sage Dadhichi is immortal, whose bones were made into weapon
Who averted humanity's problem, by sacrificing his own own body
What man is that who cannot put down his life for benefit of humanity

Chanakya was great, for he raised Chandragupta
to fight with cruel king, and chased away greek enemy
What boatman is that who cannot sail his boat to coast during storms

What a life King Maharana Pratap's had, after leaving his palace
Even after eating roti of grass, he fought for his freedom
What patriotism is that which cannot choose path of hardship

Maharana didn't have money, and without money, couldn't have army
Then Bhamashah came up with all his wealth and jewellery
What money is that when needed couldn't be donated

आप मिले तो

आप मिले तो लगा जिंदगी

अपनी आज निहाल हुई

मन जैसे कश्मीर हुआ है

आँखें नैनीताल हुई।

तन्हाई का बोझा ढो-ढो

कमर जवानी की टूटी

चेहरे का लावण्य बचाये

नही मिली ऐसी बूटी

आप मिले तो उम्र हमारी

जैसे सोलह साल हुई।

तारों ने सन्यास लिया था

चाँद बना था वैरागी

रात सध्वी बनकर काटी

दिन काटा बनकर त्यागी

आप मिले तो एक भिखारिन

जैसे मालामाल हुई।

कल तक तो सपनों की बगिया

में पतझर का शासन था

कलियाँ  थी लाचार द्रोपदी

मौसम बना दुःशासन था

आप मिले तो लगा सुहागिन

हर पत्ति, हर डाल हुई।

बस्ती में रहकर भी हमने

उम्र पहाड़ों पर काटी

कभी मिली हैं हमें ढलानें

कभी मिली ऊंची घाटी

आप मिले तो धूल राह की

चन्दन और गुलाल हुई।

अंधे को मिल गी आँख

भूखे को आज मिली रोटी

जीवन की ऊसर धरती में

दूब ऊठी छोटी-छोटी

आप मिले तो सभी निलंबित

खुशियाँ आज बहाल हुई

मन जैसे कश्मीर हुआ है

आँखे नैनीताल हुई।

English Translation

When I met you, I felt my life has been redeemed,
My heart became [happy as in] Kashmir, eyes became [beautiful as] Nainital

Back of my youth was burdened by weight of loneliness,
I didn't find a medicine which could stop decay of glow of the face,
Yet, when I met you, I became [as youthful as] 16 year old

Stars had abandoned me, Moon was uninterested,
Nights were spent as ascetic, Day as carefree,
Yet, when I met you, suddenly a mendicant became prosperous

Till yesterday, fall ruled by garden of dreams,
Flower buds quivered like Draupadi against Dusashan of season
Yet, when I met you, I felt every leaf and branch became like new bride

I spent my time [like] in hills, even when I was living in town,
Sometimes I found slopes, sometimes valleys,
Yet, when I met you, even path of dust became [fragrant as] sandalwood and colourful

Like a blind finding an eye, and hungry finding a bread
Grass started growing on barren land of life,
When I met you, all my pending desires were fulfilled
My heart became [happy as in] Kashmir, eyes became [beautiful as] Nainital

सखि, वे मुझसे कहकर जाते

सखि, वे मुझसे कहकर जाते,
कह, तो क्या मुझको वे अपनी पथ-बाधा ही पाते?

मुझको बहुत उन्होंने माना
फिर भी क्या पूरा पहचाना?
मैंने मुख्य उसी को जाना
जो वे मन में लाते।

स्वयं सुसज्जित करके क्षण में,
प्रियतम को, प्राणों के पण में,
हमीं भेज देती हैं रण में -
क्षात्र-धर्म के नाते।

हुआ न यह भी भाग्य अभागा,
किसपर विफल गर्व अब जागा?
जिसने अपनाया था, त्यागा;
रहे स्मरण ही आते!

नयन उन्हें हैं निष्ठुर कहते,
पर इनसे जो आँसू बहते,
सदय हृदय वे कैसे सहते?
गये तरस ही खाते!

जायें, सिद्धि पावें वे सुख से,
दुखी न हों इस जन के दुख से,
उपालम्भ दूँ मैं किस मुख से?
आज अधिक वे भाते!

गये, लौट भी वे आवेंगे,
कुछ अपूर्व-अनुपम लावेंगे,
रोते प्राण उन्हें पावेंगे,

Poem is from perspective of wife (addressing her friend) of Gautama Bhuddha who renounced her and his married life in pursuit of truth and God.

Dear friend, he could have spoken to me before leaving,
Tell me, would he have found me hinderance in his path?

He respected and loved me a lot,
But did he really understand me?
I had always consider that priority,
whatever he uttered and believed.
Dear friend, he could have spoken to me before leaving,

In a moment's notice, armouring..
..our husbands, even against dangers of their lives,
we [wives] send them to war,
to defend the truth and virtue.
Dear friend, he could have spoken to me before leaving,

Isn't my fortune all ruined now?
Of whom will I be proud of?
Who I considered mine, abandoned me!
Oh, I miss him so much.
Dear friend, he could have spoken to me before leaving,

My eyes rue his cold-heartedness,

But tears falling from these,

How could he, of tender heart, would have borne?

He could have pitied me!

Dear friend, he could have spoken to me before leaving,

I pray that he find truth he is seeking,

That he isn't worried by my pain,

How can I even condemn him?

My love for him as only increased!

I am sure he will come back,

And bring back something nice and unique,

तो जी को धैर्य बंधा देता,

मरना तो होगा ही मुझको, जब मरना था तब मर न सका!

English Translation

I couldn't do anything in my life.

World was engulfed in darkness,
I brought light
I burnt my whole life, but I couldn't remove the darkness.
I couldn't do anything in my life.

Had I put down my own fire
I would have at least given myself satisfaction
There was ocean of love, but I couldn't even get small pot for me.
I couldn't do anything in my life.

Lost time wouldn't come again,
My heart will regret forever
Eventually I will die, but I didn't die when I had to.
I couldn't do anything in my life.

तुम्हारा साथ

सुख के दुःख के पथ पर जीवन
छोड़ता हुआ पदचाप गया,
तुम साथ रही, हँसते-हँसते
इतना लम्बा पथ नाप गया

तुम उतरी चुपके से मेरे
यौवन वन में बन कर बहार
गुनगुना उठे भौंरे, गुंजित हो
कोयल का आलाप गया

स्वप्निल स्वप्निल सा लगा गगन
रंगो में भीगी-सी धरती
जब बही तुम्हारी हँसी हवा-सी
पत्ता पत्ता कांप गया

जाने कितने दिन हम यूँही
बहके मौसम के साथ रहे
जाने कितने ही ख्वाब
हमारी आँखों में वह छाप गया

धीरे-धीरे घर के कामों ने
हाथ तुम्हारे थाम लिये
मेरा भी मन अब नये समय का
नया इशारा भाँप गया

अरतन -बरतन, चुल्हा चक्की
रोटी पानी के राग उठे
झड़ गये बहकते रंग, ह्रदय में
भावों का भर ताप गया

मैंने ना किया, तुमने ना किया
अब प्यार भरा संवाद कभी
बोलता हुआ वह प्यार न जाने
कब बन क्रिया कलाप गया

झगड़े भी हुए, अनबोला भी
पर सदा दर्द की चादर से
चुपके से कोई एक-दूसरे का
नंगापन ढाँप गया

इस विषय सफर की आँधी में
हम चले हाथ में हाथ दिये
चलते-चलते हम थके नहीं
आखिर रास्ता ही हांफ गया




English Translation

Life continued on leaving footprints on path of happiness and sorrow
But with you, I travelled this whole long journey happily,

Your descended stealthily in my jungle of youth as spring season,
Bumble bees sang and cuckoo's voice became sweeter

Sky became dreamy and earth became colourful
Even leaves shook coyly when you laughed

How many days we lived in our lovely intoxication
How many dreams we weaved in our eyes

Slowly, but household chores occupied your time
Even my heart understood the new sign of new times

Questions of domestic nature became big issues
All colours washed away, and heart became bereft of emotions

I didn't, and you didn't too, speak in romantic tone anymore
One wonders when our love became the everyday routine

We fought, we were mad,
But we covered each other's nakedness by blanket of pain, silently, supportingly

In this tumultuous world, we walked hand in hand
We didn't stop walking. In the end, path itself stopped

तीर पर कैसे रुकू में

तीर पर कैसे रुकूँ मैं
आज लहरों में निमंत्रण!

रात का अंतिम पहर है
झिलमिलाते हैं सितारे,
वक्ष पर युग बाहु बाँधे
मैं खड़ा सागर किनारे,
वेग से बहता प्रभंजन
केश-पट मेरे उड़ाता,
शून्य से भरता उदधि-
उर की रहस्यमयी पुकारें,

इन पुकारों की प्रतिध्वनी
हो रही मेरे हृदय में,
है प्रतिच्छयित जहाँ पर
सिंधु का हिलोल कम्पन!

तीर पर कैसे रुकूँ मैं
आज लहरों में निमंत्रण!

आज अपने स्वप्न को मैं

सच बनाना चाहता हूँ,

दूर की इस कल्पना के

पास जान चाहता हूँ,

चाहता हूँ तैर जाना

सामने अंबुधि पड़ा जो,

कुछ विभा उस पार की

इस पार लाना चाहता हूँ,

स्वर्ग के भी स्वप्न भू पर

देख उनसे दूर ही था

किन्तु पाऊंगा नहीं कर

आज अपने पर नियंत्रण | 

तीर पर कैसे रुकूँ मैं
आज लहरों में निमंत्रण!

आ रही प्राची क्षितिज से
खींचने वाली सदाऐं,
मानवो के भाग्य-निर्णायक
सितारों! दो दुआऐं,
नाव, नाविक, फेर ले जा
है नहीं कुछ काम इसका,
आज लहरों से उलझने को
फड़कती हैं भुजाऐं!

प्राप्त हो उस पार भी इस
पर-सा चाहे अँधेरा,
प्राप्त हो युग की उषा
चाहे लुटाती नव किरण-धन|

तीर पर कैसे रुकूँ मैं

आज लहरों में निमंत्रण!

How can I stay ashore today?
Waves call out to me!

It's last part of night,
Stars are twinkling in sky,
Holding the world wrapped in my arms,
I stand ashore.
A fast wind,
Caresses my hairs.
Ocean fills the silence,
With mysterious calls from its depths.
Reverberation of these calls,
Is sounding in my heart,
Where falls a show of,
Vibrations from the Sea.

How can I stay ashore today?
Waves call out to me!

To my dreams, today,
I want to make true,
To the vision of far away,
I want to go near to,
I want to swim away,
For Sea is just ahead of me,
Some light from the other end,
I want to bring this end.

Even after seeing dreams of heaven,
Yet, I was far on earth.
But I will not be able to,
Control myself today.

How can I stay ashore today?
Waves call out to me!

From the east horizon,
Comes calls pulling me there.
You, the fortune makes of humans,
Stars! Bless me.
O boatman, take away your boat,
I don't need it today.
To fight with waves of Ocean,

सारे जहाँ से अच्छा

सारे जहाँ से अच्छा, हिन्दोस्तां हमारा
हम बुलबुलें हैं इसकी, यह गुलिसतां हमारा

गुरबत में हों अगर हम, रहता है दिल वतन में
समझो वहीं हमें भी, दिल हो जहाँ हमारा

परबत वो सबसे ऊँचा, हमसाया आसमाँ का
वो संतरी हमारा, वो पासवां हमारा

गोदी में खेलती हैं, जिसकी हज़ारों नदियाँ
गुलशन है जिसके दम से, रश्क-ए-जिनां हमारा

ऐ आब-ए-रौंद-ए-गंगा! वो दिन है याद तुझको
उतरा तेरे किनारे, जब कारवां हमारा

मजहब नहीं सिखाता, आपस में बैर रखना
हिन्दी हैं हम वतन हैं, हिन्दोस्तां हमारा

यूनान, मिस्र, रोमां, सब मिट गए जहाँ से ।
अब तक मगर है बाकी, नाम-ओ-निशां हमारा

कुछ बात है कि हस्ती, मिटती नहीं हमारी
सदियों रहा है दुश्मन, दौर-ए-जहाँ हमारा

'इक़बाल' कोई मरहूम, अपना नहीं जहाँ में
मालूम क्या किसी को, दर्द-ए-निहां हमारा

सारे जहाँ से अच्छा, हिन्दोस्तां हमारा
हम बुलबुलें हैं इसकी, यह गुलिसतां हमारा ।

कदम कदम बढ़ाये जा

ये जिंदगी है क़ौम की
तू क़ौम पे लुटाये जा

तू शेर-ए-हिन्द आगे बढ़

ग़म-ए-निशाँ संभाल के
लाल क़िले पे गाड़ के
लहराये जा लहराये जा

कदम कदम बढ़ाये जा
खुशी के गीत गाये जा
ये जिंदगी है क़ौम की
तू क़ौम पे लुटाये जा

इतने ऊँचे उठो

इतने ऊँचे उठो कि जितना उठा गगन है।
देखो इस सारी दुनिया को एक दृष्टि से
सिंचित करो धरा, समता की भाव वृष्टि से
जाति भेद की, धर्म-वेश की
काले गोरे रंग-द्वेष की
ज्वालाओं से जलते जग में
इतने शीतल बहो कि जितना मलय पवन है॥

नये हाथ से, वर्तमान का रूप सँवारो
नयी तूलिका से चित्रों के रंग उभारो
नये राग को नूतन स्वर दो
भाषा को नूतन अक्षर दो
युग की नयी मूर्ति-रचना में
इतने मौलिक बनो कि जितना स्वयं सृजन है॥

लो अतीत से उतना ही जितना पोषक है
जीर्ण-शीर्ण का मोह मृत्यु का ही द्योतक है
तोड़ो बन्धन, रुके न चिंतन
गति, जीवन का सत्य चिरन्तन
धारा के शाश्वत प्रवाह में
इतने गतिमय बनो कि जितना परिवर्तन है।

चाह रहे हम इस धरती को स्वर्ग बनाना
अगर कहीं हो स्वर्ग, उसे धरती पर लाना
सूरज, चाँद, चाँदनी, तारे
सब हैं प्रतिपल साथ हमारे
दो कुरूप को रूप सलोना
इतने सुन्दर बनो कि जितना आकर्षण है॥

English Translation

Rise as high, as high is the sky,
See the world with one eye,
Purify the land, with oneness of feeling,
Of race and caste, Of religion and differences,
Of blakes and whites, Of colour and apartheid,
In world burning with these evils,
Be as calming, as the wind from Himalayas

Make present better with your new hands,
Make paintings prettier with your new brush,
Give new tune to melody,
Give new letter to language,
In new construction of this world,
Be as original, as the creation itself is

Take only what is useful from the past,
Sticking to life and limb is sign of fear of death,
Break all constraints, let thought flow,
For motion if life's forever truth,
In continuous flow of stream,
Be as fast, as the change itself is

We want to make heaven on this earth,
If there is a heaven anywhere, to bring that here,
Sun, Moon, Moonlight, Stars,
Everybody is with us always,
Make ugliness prettier,
Be as beautiful, as attraction itself is

बढ़े चलो, बढ़े चलो

न हाथ एक शस्त्र हो,
न हाथ एक अस्त्र हो,
न अन्न वीर वस्त्र हो,

आयु का क्षण-क्षण समर्पित।

तोड़ता हूँ मोह का बंधन, क्षमा दो
गॉंव मेरी, द्वार-घर मेरी, ऑंगन, क्षमा दो
आज सीधे हाथ में तलवार दे-दो
और बाऍं हाथ में ध्‍वज को थमा दो

सुमन अर्पित, चमन अर्पित
नीड़ का तृण-तृण समर्पित

पर हे हरि, डाला जाऊँ

चाह नहीं, देवों के सिर पर
चढ़ूँ भाग्य पर इठलाऊँ

मुझे तोड़ लेना वनमाली
उस पथ पर देना तुम फेंक

मातृभूमि पर शीश चढ़ाने
जिस पर जावें वीर अनेक

English Translation
Poem is from perspective of a flower, saying to its gardener

I don't desire to be part of ornaments of young women,
I don't desire to be part of garlands of lovers,
Oh God, I don't desire to be part of funeral procession of Kings,
Neither I desire to be offered to Gods in prayer, and feel proud of myself,
Just pluck me, O my gardener, and throw me on that path,
On which brave men journey to sacrifice their head for Motherland.

कोशिश करने वालों की

लहरों से डर कर नौका पार नहीं होती,
कोशिश करने वालों की कभी हार नहीं होती।

नन्हीं चींटी जब दाना लेकर चलती है,
चढ़ती दीवारों पर, सौ बार फिसलती है।
मन का विश्वास रगों में साहस भरता है,
चढ़कर गिरना, गिरकर चढ़ना न अखरता है।
आख़िर उसकी मेहनत बेकार नहीं होती,
कोशिश करने वालों की कभी हार नहीं होती।

डुबकियां सिंधु में गोताखोर लगाता है,
जा जा कर खाली हाथ लौटकर आता है।
मिलते नहीं सहज ही मोती गहरे पानी में,
बढ़ता दुगना उत्साह इसी हैरानी में।
मुट्ठी उसकी खाली हर बार नहीं होती,
कोशिश करने वालों की कभी हार नहीं होती।

असफलता एक चुनौती है, इसे स्वीकार करो,
क्या कमी रह गई, देखो और सुधार करो।
जब तक न सफल हो, नींद चैन को त्यागो तुम,
संघर्ष का मैदान छोड़ कर मत भागो तुम।
कुछ किये बिना ही जय जय कार नहीं होती,
कोशिश करने वालों की कभी हार नहीं होती।

One cannot cross ocean being afraid of waves
Those who try, aren't defeated

When little ant walks with grain
She climbs over walls, slips hundreds of times
Faith in her heart, motivates her
Climbing after falling, falling after climbing doesn't bother her
Lastly, her efforts bear fruit
Those who try, aren't defeated

Diver dives in ocean
And comes back empty handed again and again
After all, pearls aren't found easily in deep water
And this hope encourages him twice as much
His fist isn't empty every time
Those who try, aren't defeated

Failure is a challenge, accept that
What was amiss, observe and improve
Till you obtain success, abandon all rest and sleep
Don't run away from struggle
After all, one doesn't get glory without doing anything

तूफानों की ओर घुमा दो नाविक निज पतवार

आज सिन्धु ने विष उगला है
लहरों का यौवन मचला है
आज ह्रदय में और सिन्धु में
साथ उठा है ज्वार

तूफानों की ओर घुमा दो नाविक निज पतवार

लहरों के स्वर में कुछ बोलो
इस अंधड में साहस तोलो
कभी-कभी मिलता जीवन में
तूफानों का प्यार

यह असीम, निज सीमा जाने
सागर भी तो यह पहचाने
मिट्टी के पुतले मानव ने

Today, ocean is churning poison,
Waves are getting strong,
Today, tides have risen in my heart and the ocean together!

Let's talk to waves in their language,
Let's weigh our courage in this turmoil,
It's not usual in life to find love of the waves!

This infinite seas, should know its limit
Ocean must recognize this,
